Adenovirus causes respiratory tract infections, conjunctivitis, and diarrhea. Infections are most common in individuals who are immunocompromised and in young children. A fourfold or greater titer rise in paired sera specimens (acute and convalescent) supports diagnosis of a recent infection.
 
     
Specimen Container:
VCM - Viral-Chlamydial-Mycoplasma transport medium (green-cap) available from client supplies
Preferred Specimen:
3 mL Nasopharyngeal lavage/wash, Nasopharyngeal swab & Throat swab
Instructions:
Obtain cellular material with sterile swab and transfer to clean glass slide in a circle smaller than 15 mm diameter. Let air dry. Submit swabs in VCM. After aseptic collection of fluids, transfer 3 mL to VCM in equal volume (i.e. 3 mL fluid + 3 mL VCM). Direct smear submitted on fluorescent slide accepted. Do NOT freeze slide.
